Packing boxesMoving to a new country is an exciting adventure! There is so much to learn and look forward to. You will need to become familiar with a new lifestyle that has many differences from your home country.  

The City of Timmins welcomes you!

Once you've arrived in Timmins, there are plenty of resources and friendly people to provide information and help you and your family settle with ease and comfort.  We want to help make you feel at home.

Now that you're here, you will need to find basic necessities such as a place to live, food, clothing and furniture. You'll also need to get enrolled with the public health care system, find a job, get a driver's licence, register your children in school and  so much more.

After you Arrive Checklist

  • Find temporary accommodations for your first few nights in Timmins (if you haven't already done so)

  • Exchange your money for Canadian currency at a local bank

  • Apply for the Ontario Health Insurance Plan (OHIP), a publicly funded program that covers basic health care services

  • Apply for the Interim Federal Health(IFH) Program, a short-term health insurance program that provides temporary health insurance until you are covered by OHIP

  • Apply for a Social Insurance Number (SIN), which you are required to have to work in Canada
