Post-Secondary Educational Institutions

Three post-secondary institutions are located in Timmins: Northern College, College Boréal and Université de Hearst. Full and part-time education is available in both English and French in a variety of programs including degrees, continuing education, apprenticeship and job re-entry skills.

In 2008, Collège Boréal announced the construction of a 42,000 sq ft facility next door to the French catholic high school, École secondaire catholique Thériault. The new  $11.5 million campus will open just in time for the 2009-2010 school year and will now be able to accommodate up to 500 students. Université de Hearst has also received $3.5 million to fund a new 15,000 sq ft campus adjacent to the new Collège Boréal. These new campuses joining the French high school will create a French-language education hub in Timmins, offering secondary school diplomas, college diplomas, skills training and university degrees from one multi-function location.

Northern College also received an $8 million investment for Northern College's new Nor Tech Centre for Trades and Technology, a 35,000 sq ft facility that will feature new state-of-the-art classrooms and will allow the Porcupine campus to offer more programs in skilled trades and technology. With an estimated total cost of $13.5 million dollars, construction is expected to be complete by September 2010, and will help the college accept over 120 additional students per year in its skilled trades and technology programs.
